Quick answer
The strongest match should feel secure when you plant, cut and land. Look first at traction, then lateral stability, cushioning behavior and fit. A shoe can feel soft while standing still yet become unstable during a hard change of direction, so comfort alone is not enough.
Volleyball is a sequence of short accelerations, split steps, lateral recoveries, approach jumps and controlled landings. For shoes for liberos, the outsole should grip a clean indoor court without feeling sticky or unpredictable. The platform should resist rolling during defensive movement while still allowing the forefoot to flex naturally.
More cushioning is not automatically better. Hitters and middle blockers may value impact protection through repeated jumps, while liberos and defensive specialists often prefer a lower, quicker platform. Setters typically need balance: enough protection for jumping, but enough court feel to move decisively in every direction.
Your heel should remain seated and your midfoot should feel supported. Leave practical space in front of the toes for braking and landing. Players with wider feet should not solve pressure by buying excessive length; a genuinely roomier last is usually the better answer.
